New production of Teatro de la Zarzuela

The second «double programme» of this season brings the world of the circus and the theatre to the Teatro de la Zarzuela stage in two very different stories directed by Ignacio García. In the first part, the operetta Black, el payaso, with music by Sorozábal, shows us a character who is driven by love to deceive and lie so as to achieve a happy end. The delightful conclusion contrasts with the drama of a jealous husband -in the second part of the evening- which becomes the main theme of the piece created by Leoncavallo.

Synopsis

In Black, el payaso, the action takes place in Paris (France) and San Telmo (Orsonia) at an indeterminate time. During a performance of the clowns Black and White at the Teatro Alhambra of Paris, Princess Sofia and some of her entourage arrive. Black changes the programme to the surprise of White, he plays a melody on the violin which has such impact on the princess that she faints...

In I pagliacci the action takes place in Monfalto (Calabria) on the 15th of August, feast day of the Assumption, between 1865 y 1870. Tonio, a clown, appears on stage. He explains the true nature of the story which is to be performed for the audience in the theatre. It is afternoon. A group of travelling comedians arrive in the town, that night they will give a performance. At the sound of the church bells, everyone attends vespers. However Tonio takes advantage to declare his amourous feelings towards Nedda. She is the wife of Cannio, Director of the theatrical company. She rejects Tonio violently. However it will soon transpire that Nedda is, in fact, in love with another man in the town whose name is Silvio. That same day Tonio tells Canio about his wife's infidelity and he discovers the lovers. Silvio gets away without being recognised. At that moment, there is an announcement that the performance is about to begin. As the clown gets himself ready, he is beside himself with jealousy and cries bitterly...
