The deadly rivalry between Salieri and Mozart is emblazoned in the collective imagination thanks to the power of film. Even though musicological research has refuted it, this hasn’t stopped the legend from being established, fuelled in Mozart y Salieri (1830) by the father of modern Russian literature, Alexander Pushkin. Years later, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov used this short theatrical work, particularly captivating in the context of Romanticism, to compose his opera of the same name. The opera incorporated excerpts from Le nozze di Figaro, Don Giovanni and, of course, Mozart’s Requiem. The triumph of art over morality and the creative power of envy are the central issues in this small-scale opera.
