Venga Usted a pasar la tarde; un despropósito lírico en dos actos que son uno y un espejo.

DESPROPÓSITO LÍRICO EN UN ACTO

In the case of the works we are concerned with here, we have two good scores from two of our best musicians of the era, but with original texts which are littered with jokes which are in some cases incomprehensible for today’s audiences, and which in other cases could justifiably be labelled as sexist. This is the basic reason which has led Enrique Viana to create the free version that we are going to enjoy tonight, which weaves both works into a single show. In this new production from the Teatro de la Zarzuela, the stage director maintains the music and the sung parts intact, and makes radical changes to the spoken text. And so he places Free Teaching at the service of The Little White Cat, rewriting the first completely and leaving only the plot and the characters of the second.

Synopsis

Cruz and Baldomero are a married couple, both university teachers, who live at number 4, Madrazo Street. She’s a linguist and he’s a nostalgic anthropologist who is studying “the influence of zarzuela on thinking minds”, and wants to put the final touch to his thesis by putting on a género chico show at the university with a budget of nil. He recruits his daughter for this – and she in turn recruits a friend – along with his wife, his sister, and even the theatre usher. They’re going to put on The Little White Cat and a lot of people are needed: some of the audience come to their aid… and an outline is given of what this Giménez piece will be.
The Little White Cat is Luisa, a dazzling Variety star, who is in love with Manolo, a penniless beau who finds himself forced to marry Rosario, a rich heiress from Cuenca. Doña Virtudes and Don Servando, Rosario’s parents, are happy to see their little girl take on the gloss of the big city, but Rosario loves Periquín, her cousin. Luisa manages to pass as the teacher who will instruct Rosario in the latest trends of the capital and sets up the marriage of Rosario to Periquín, in order to leave the way open to Manolo’s heart.
