Contemporary zarzuela

Music by TOMÁS MARCO
Libretto by Álvaro del Amo
Commission of the Teatro de la Zarzuela
- Worldpremiere -

The zarzuela Policías y ladrones (Cops and Robbers) is the Teatro de la Zarzuela’s latest commission and première, although the list of contemporary lyric works dates back to the 1980s and 1990s with a series for the old Sala Olimpia. In addition, this work joins a series of new productions by Spanish authors on the same Plazuela de Jovellanos stage.
On this occasion Marco returns with a zarzuela, almost 50 years after the première of Moreno Buendía’s Fuenteovejuna, with the purpose of updating, in a sense, the genre. For the composer, this new production is “an artistic adventure that I consider to be worth trying”, for it is a matter of taking on a ground-breaking creative project, that of bringing political corruption out onto the stage; the purpose is to show corruption as “a peculiar farce, without the seriousness of devastating criticism, with the aplomb and levity of a plot whose intrigue includes the tension of suspense, in an array of stereotypes, figures, hypothetical incidents and credible absurdities”.
This new zarzuela, with its tragicomic tone, leaning towards sarcastic scepticism, offers a musically attractive result. Conducting the orchestra will be José Ramón Encinar, a maestro with virtually unrivalled knowledge of contemporary Spanish music. And, as Carme Portaceli, the show’s stage director, herself indicates, this will be “like a kind of atonement; let’s see if, through irony, through a stage language that allows us to act out the horror of our story, like fire on the eve of the Feast of St John, we can create distance from that thing that weighs on us like a millstone and which shames us every day: corruption”.
